Increased Copper Theft – Mangrove Mountain

Local Police Crime prevention have passed on an ‘Intelligence Alert’ to us for distribution stating:

Information from Integral Energy indicates increased copper theft from power poles in Mangrove Mountain area since April 2010.

MO (modus operandi) – offenders use small to medium sized bolt cutters, axe and chainsaws to remove copper earthing straps from power poles.  Poles in remote locations are particularly vulnerable.  This type of theft can put the netword at risk and may result in damage to property and in extreme cases injury to persons.

A number of contractors and trades people have legal access to power poles ie Integral Energy, Foxte, council, all of which should have appropriate identification.  However if you see suspicious persons near power poles you should not approach them, record descriptions of persons and vehicles and then contact the following numbers:

Calls to triple “0” and PAL are traceable and accountable.  If you contact PAL and follow up is required by a police officer the job is automatically forwarded to the nearest police station.

It is hoped the community will report all incidents of malicious damage, drugs, traffic, break and enter matters or otherwise to the police.  Reporting matters to police helps us to track trends, possibly identify offenders and locate stolen property. Police must prioritise their jobs and sometimes there may be delays.
